The Art of Lei Making

Hawaiian lei are more than beautiful flowers—they're living symbols of aloha, carrying centuries of tradition in every bloom. The art of lei making traces back to ancient hula traditions, where dancers and their ohana would gather flowers with reverence, offering prayers of gratitude to each plant. They harvested thoughtfully, ensuring the beauty of Hawaii's flora would continue to flourish.

Handcrafted with Intention

Every lei we create honors this sacred tradition. Each flower is placed with care, following time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Whether strung through the center for a classic single lei or woven through the side for our fuller double lei, every piece is a work of art with endless possibilities.

Traditional Techniques

Single Lei (Kui): Flowers are strung through the center, creating a lighter, more delicate appearance. This traditional method showcases individual blooms while creating graceful draping.

Double Lei (Haku Style): Flowers are woven through the side, requiring three times more blooms. The result is a fuller, more luxurious lei with impressive presence and weight.

Haku (Head Lei): Fresh flowers, greenery, and ti leaves are woven together into crowns worn on the head. Traditionally worn for weddings and graduations, these elaborate pieces represent the highest level of lei-making artistry.

Sacred Traditions We Honor

The Open Lei: In Hawaiian custom, pregnant women traditionally wear open-ended lei (like maile) rather than closed lei around the neck, honoring the belief that closed circles should not encircle new life.

The Presentation: Lei are traditionally presented with a kiss on the cheek and the word "Aloha," symbolizing the warm spirit of welcome and celebration.

The Removal: When removing a lei, it should never be thrown away in the presence of the giver. Instead, return it to the earth by hanging it in a tree or leaving it in a special place, allowing the flowers to return to nature.
